Off the beaten track: Dana Village

After spending a few days in Madaba, it was time to say goodbye to our friend at Black Iris Hotel and move on.

Our next destination was Dana village. We booked a taxi and we were on our way. As we were driving on the winding road, the driver stopped several times to show us the beautiful view of Jordanian scenery.

One of these stops was also at Sammy´s, who claims to have the best coffee in the world.

His humble home is located above the Wadi Mujib, where we went canyoning. So the view from here is spectacular.

He even jokes, that he has the craziest toilet in the world.

Needless to say, Sammy had secret agenda. He was trying to convince us to stay at "his friend´s village in Dana". We said yes to get him off our back and told the driver to take us to the Dana village - as planed.

Prior to our arrival to Dana, we stopped at Karak, to see the crusader´s castle. It is one of the biggest crusader´s castles in the region.

As we walked around the castle, we met Ian again. Ian was also enjoying Sammy´s coffee and view of Wadi Mujib. He told us, that he had unpleasant experience with Sammy after we left the place. Ian said, that Sammy demanded money for coffee, even though we gave him 10 dinars (about 10 EUR). 10 dinars is more than enough, since 1 cup of coffee costs less than 1 dinar in the city. So, everyone who is travelling to Jordan, be careful with people who appear to be over-friendly and nice.

Finally we arrived at the Dana village. This is a small and over 500 years old village away from civilization, which is just opening for tourism. We chose the Dana hotel for our accommodation. The room was humble but cosy. Thick walls made sure that the room had a nice cold temperature.

After the check-in, we got hungry so went to the common place, where people were gathering. We met Tamara, the volunteer from California. She took care, that we had everything.

Our first meal, was very modest, yet delicious. We were really surprised, how they made a nutritious meal from so little ingredients.

Now that we were full, we still had a whole afternoon ahead of us. We decided to take a short hike around the village.

After the hike Tamara and the hotel´s manager took us with them to see the new camping site, which will be opened for tourists next season.

In the evening, we just enjoyed the beautiful nature...

Greetings from Dana village,

Jerneja & Boris
