On the Easter Friday it seemed appropriate to do some activities related to Christian religion. And that's why we chose to do one-day-trip to Madaba and surroundings on that day. But first we had to do two things. Eat some breakfast and change hotel. Regarding the breakfast decision was pretty obvious.
Despite all the crowd we weren't disappointed at all. And with than delicious food it was easier to choose appropriate hotel. We decided on Mamaya hotel near the main street in downtown. Our new room looked like...
... and it was cleaner and nicer. In the hotel we arranged trip for the day to Madaba. After waiting for a couple of minutes our taxi showed up.
We entered that taxi and of course we received warm "Welcome to Jordan!" And so our journey has started. After one hour of driving with the taxi across beautiful countryside we arrived in Madaba. The city is best known for the mosaics, especially mosaic map of The Holy Land in the floor of the city church.
Unfortunately parts of the mosaic were missing. Outside of the church was a picture of the whole map, at least how it should be.
The church with the mosaic was the main attraction in the city and after seeing this we moved on to next destination: Mount Nebo. On the way to the next destination we saw a lot of olive farms. We asked the driver what is this all about and he told us that Jordan has a rich history of producing olive oil. No wonder why we had impression that Jordan's countryside is similar to Mediterranean's.
We stopped on the hill at 817 meter above sea level where Monut Nebo was.
You are probably wondering what Mount Nebo is? Ok... Mount Nebo is the elevated ridge mentioned in the Bible as the place where Moses was granted a view of the Promised Land. We were standing at that point...
... and view is really outstanding...
On the site the church was built.
Beside that church was a place where was a lot of mosaics and... hm... more mosaics.
It was extremely hot and we just wanted to sit in car and let the wind from opened window cool down our bodies. Our last holy destination for today was Jesus' Baptism site. We arrived at the entrance to the site. While we were waiting for a bus to pick us up and drive us to the site itself we had time for afternoon holy coffee.
At the place where we bought tickets they told us to wait 15 minutes for the bus. And exactly as planed after 45 minutes the bus arrived.
The site was near the border with Israel. At one point we were just one river away from Israel border.
There were a lot of churches and places with the holy water.
And finally we arrived at the actual baptism site. There were not much left except the stairways to heaven.
In the site was also large swimming pool where people can get baptized. They filled it up with holy water in case of someone arrange baptisement.
We said: "Enough of holiness for one day!" and we took taxi back to Amman. We ended our day with nice (but not really comparable to Hashem's falalfel) shawarma.
Surrounded with holy spirits we went to bed with the plan going next day more to the northern part of Jordan.
Holy greetings from Amman, Madaba, Mount Nebo and Baptism Site,
Boris & Jerneja
